One evening almost 60 years ago around a card table in Jasper, Indiana, four enterprising men started talking about more than cards. What if they began a furniture-making company together, right there in their hometown? The four decided to give it a try, and they invited three other men to join. The seventh (and last) investor happened to be Omer Sturm, who was chosen to operate the new enterprise. Each of the seven invested $1,500, and the Jasper Table Company was born.
The company began as a maker of tables for people's homes and was incorporated in November of 1948. It was in the 1960s that the company began moving from tables to office furniture, at first making casegoods for other manufacturers to sell. Seeing how successful that was, however, the company soon began selling its wooden casegoods itself.
Over the years it gradually evolved into a sophisticated manufacturer of top-quality desks, credenzas and bookcases. Some of its products today are designed for institutions such as schools and libraries, but most are distinctive casegoods for private offices. The company even changed its name to Inwood Office Furniture in 1982 to reflect the evolution and to emphasize the material it counts on - wood - to create environments of warmth and stability for executive offices.
While Inwood is evolving in its type and breadth of product line, the company's way of doing business on a day-to-day basis remains a constant, thanks to its stable and loyal work force, now numbering 185 employees. Inwood is still a family business. The seven initial investors have all passed on, but as the second Sturm generation Glen Sturm continues to direct the company. Many employees have not only been with the company a long time (an average of nine years) but are the people who shaped the staff in its early years.
Associates and their parents who shaped the company in its early years, have lived their entire lives in the rolling hills of Indiana, an area long known for its furniture making, hardwork and quiet way of life. Inwood strives to offer products that reflect the pride of the associates that produce them.
